Growing lentils

A long time ago, there was a large lake in the flat valley below Casteluccio. The base stone is limestone. When a large sink hole developed, the lake water went underground, leaving a fertile plain.

In July there is a carpet of flowers, said to be spectacular.

Last winter was a bad one and only 30% of the area has been planted because of the late rains.

I was up in the town when I took the blip and you can just see fields below and the mountains in the distance.

At lunchtime, we ate at the hotel we should have stayed at last night. The family is working hard to make a go of their business after the earthquake and they were very keen to look after us well.

Later I met two Botanists who wanted to identify the subspecies of this plant. See extra. One did not wish to be photographed!

We had a long day out then a very cheerful evening in a local Italian restaurant.

Tomorrow we return to Rome.
