Pipe Dream Home

Down at Kirkcaldy Harbour, the harbour walls are pierced by a few drainage pipes.  Some of them are permanently dry and these are used each year by a few pairs of sand martins, Riparia riparia.

Numbers are limited because they obviously cannot dig fresh burrows in the concrete walls.  I'm sure they are grateful for the few ready-made burrows available to them.

Both parents were constantly popping in and out of this one so must have had some hungry young ones inside.
