Saw This Today

Making a Mark

We saw some of the traditional cart marking ceremony taking place in Guildhall on Saturday morning.
While now only ceremonial, it dates back about hundreds of years to when carts were branded with a letter to show they were licensed to trade for a year. Now various vintage and modern vehicles are marked after paying the 5 shillings fee.
This Fuller's lorry is steam powered.
We couldn't stay long as we were on the way to a history of coffee houses in the City walking tour. Let me tell you, coffee in the 17th century tasted a lot different to today, more like a caffeinated oxtail soup than what we recognise now.
