Mangroves

Before the coming of the timber getters and market gardeners and ship builders and the holiday makers and weekenders, most of the foreshore of Brisbane Water would have been covered by mangrove wetlands. There are still lots of pockets of them.

I can’t pretend that I like mangroves much. True, their capacity to thrive in salty tidal estuaries is remarkable and true, they sequester carbon and provide habitat for all sorts of wildlife. But they are ugly and you can’t take a pleasant stroll through a muddy mangrove swamp. They trap garbage too, though that isn’t their fault. I had to search to find a shot without litter, and I still missed one plastic bottle.
