Coast Guard tugboat

Every so often, the Coast Guard visits this section of the Monongahela River, doing dredging and routine maintenance. This section of the river is about 100 miles south of Pittsburgh, PA, and water depth is carefully watched and altered by a series of lock and dams, administered by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Rumor has it that the Mon River in Morgantown was home, during WWII, to a Department of Energy facility involved in the production of materials for the Manhattan Project. The DOE still does have an office in Morgantown, and the DOE is the primary federal agency for nuclear weaponry, along with its better-known role as regulator of nuclear energy.
