Nigella seed head

I went out to the back green to read this afternoon for the first time in weeks - the weather just hasn't been up to it most of the time, or else I've been busy doing something else. Last time I was out there, the nigella had mostly been in flower, but it was now all over. Also there were far fewer birds singing: no blackbirds, no chaffinches, no goldfinches, no blue tits, no great tits, no coal tits, no robins and no dunnocks. There were gulls around and wood pigeons, also a bullfinch, but all in all it was much quieter. And there were no neighbours out either, so it seemed rather that summer was mostly over. Maybe it still has some good weather up its sleeve, here's hoping!
