Viewing sea caves from above

Thursday 31 August
Today, we hiked part of the magnificent Lakeshore trail on the mainland, starting from Meyers Beach. The trail leads to a backcountry campsite, and the total return is about 10 miles return, we did a little over 6 miles return, turning round once the most scenic part had passed, and the trail veered inland a bit. The first half mile or so is an easy walk on a board walk through the hardwood forest, after that it becomes rather more undulating, crossing several little ravines making their way to the lake shore, but nothing too strenuous. The first feature you see is the Crevasse, shown in small lower central photo so collage, then you continue past several spectacular scenes, before reaching the Bowl, in the lower left photo. As you can see, there were several guided kayak groups out enjoying them from sea level. Once we’d completed our hike, which we did at a leisurely pace, stopping to take in the gorgeous views, and watch the kayakers weaving in and out of the caves, we visited Apfelhaus fruit farm which makes their own cider, and enjoyed a tasting, followed by a glass of our choosing, sitting out in the afternoon sun. The farm has been in the same family for five generations, originally founded by Swiss immigrants, hence the German name. It is centered around a beautiful red barn, see extra, which was built in the 1920s with Western Fir, and came as a mail order barn from Sears Roebuck Company. It was shipped by train, hauled up the hill from Bayfield by horse drawn wagons and assembled by local carpenters
