The Battle of Culloden

A visit to the Culloden battlefield on Drummossie Moor near Inverness.
The Battle of Culloden was the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising of 1745. On 16 April 1746, the Jacobite army of Charles Edward Stuart was decisively defeated by a British government force under Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (aka Butcher Cumberland). Thus far it is the last pitched battle to have been fought on British soil.

The photograph is of Leanach Cottage, a heather thatched building rebuilt in the early 19th century. During the battle it was used as a field hospital by the government forces.

When we first visited the battlefield, back in the 1960s, we were the only people there! Today the place was very busy and it took me 20 minutes to get a photograph free of the madding crowd!!
