Château de Hautefort.

A very hot day for our visit to the Château de Hautefort. ( 29C) Very glad of my large brimmed sun hat.

The Chateau has had a very interesting history.
A medieval fortress besieged by Richard Coeur de Lion.
In the 17th century it was the birthplace of Marie d’Hautefort, favourite of Louis XIII.
Her brother was Grand Equerry of Louis XIV and rebuilt and transformed the castle into a residence in the classical style.
It was spared from destruction in the French Revolution.
In poor condition it was restored in the 19th century and again in 1929 by its new owner Barron Henry de Bastard.
After a devastating fire in 1968 like a Phoenix it rise from the ashes thanks to the determination of Barroness de Bastard with help from the French State and her nephew, Michel David Weill.
It now remains under the management of her family.
A very special occasion was when Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, her dear friend, visited the castle in 1978 on an official trip to Périgord.

What an enjoyable day we had looking round this beautiful place with a stunning view of the surrounding countryside.
We also had another delightful lunch. This time Confit of duck, with a cream sauce, ceps, and sauté potatoes. ( see extras)
