Critical

Of the 15 species of crane in the world, 11 are in a category of concern and Siberian Cranes (main image) are critically endangered.

A day trip to see these wonderful birds, some standing 6' tall, was a delight. We were fortunate to have a guide that explained in great detail all about the individuals they house, which included at least a pair of each species. Also we learned about their efforts to tackle the problems threatening their existence, mainly concerning habitat loss and the attitudes leading to that.

It was great to be able to see and photograph them all at close quarters and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity.

Extra: Endangered. A whooping crane whose numbers have increased to 853 due to their efforts from a low point in the 1940's of just 21 remaining birds.
