Chimpanzee

An ape, just like us. Our last common ancestor didn't live that long ago. The numbers are quite disputed, some putting this LCA at 4 million years ago, while other sources put it at more than 7 million years ago.

How much of our genetic material we share with them is also disputed. The higher estimates go around 98.8% while the lower are around 85%.

What doesn't seem to be disputed is that chimpanzees and bonobos are our closest genetic relatives.

Darwin's Theory of Evolution was really a remarkable idea. So simple that it really is genius. It removed the need for a God to explain our intelligence. Natural Selection is an algorithm, a recipe. It doesn't have foresight or intelligence.

It also means that we are not better than any other animal, or more "evolved". We are not the pinnacle of creation. We are just one of millions of organisms that have made it so far...
