Miyazu Japanese Garden

Named after Nelson's sister city Miyazu in Japan, this garden is a traditional Japanese stroll garden. Large boulders and stonework, ponds, and stepping stones create a tranquil delight.

In Miyazu Garden both New Zealand and Japanese plant species feature to symbolise the harmonising of the two cultures; harakeke (flax) and tawhai (beech) sit alongside cherry blossom and iris blooms.

Miyazu City is situated in the north of Kyoto Prefecture on the main island of Honshu. With a population of approximately 30,000, Miyazu shares many of Nelson's characteristics. Its principal activities are a fishing base, tourism, a trading port and an administrative and political centre. Its industries include seafood processing, metal work and textiles.
