St Andrew’s, Caxton

We’ve fetched up at the Pike and Eel hotel and marina near St Ives in Cambridgeshire for the next three nights as part of the lead Ip to the Old Riverport Ukulele Festival in St Ives on Saturday.

Escaping the stranglehold that traffic has on the south east we stopped off in Eltisley between Cambridge and St Neots for an 8 mile walk taken from this month’s Country Walking magazine. Rather less altitude gain than last week in the Lakes last week.

The Eltisley pub was a real find. We had a coffee there before starting off and liked the place so much that we had our evening meal there afterwards. Enjoyed a pint of Beavertown Neck Oil IPA although disappointed to learn that this craft brewery now belongs to Heineken.

St Andrew’s is in the village of Caxton, half way around the walk. A very old church, quite plain inside. This was the only stained glass window in the building. Plenty of large houses with extensive grounds around the area, understandably owing to its location near Cambridge.

Today was eldest son Matthew’s birthday. How is it he’s 44 today? Enjoyed talking to him this evening.
