Just like London buses!

Or, as in this case, they actually were London buses!
We had planned to make a day trip to RSPB reserve Rainham Marshes (in Essex) yesterday, but as the weather forecast was so awful we postponed it until today. I' m so glad we did! There was no rain at all today, and amazingly, for a Sunday,  the trains  ran perfectly. It only took  us 2 1/2 hours from Winchester to the reserve. As we arrived at Purfleet station, we were greeted by the unexpected sight of these buses. It appeared they had brought attendees for a Remembrance  service which was taking place around the war memorial.
My first extra shows a view of the reserve looking towards the  high speed rail line which carries Eurostar,  and the second is a view of  QE bridge from the  Thames path which borders one side of the reserve.
Relics from the reserve's industrial and military past are still very much in evidence, but generally it was surprisingly wild, and free of human noise. It was not too difficult to imagine that on  a dark, misty, winter night  characters from Dickens "Great Expectations " might be sensed wandering the area.
We had excellent views of a Marsh Harrier quartering the reedbeds and marsh, and we saw lots of waders and ducks. In the summer it must be alive with warblers and reed buntings and opportunistic  cuckoos.
There are four excellent hides and,  most importantly, a well appointed visitors' centre and a cafe. I think we'll be going there again before  too long.
