Standing Stone, Beare Island

Woke up to very heavy rain, which gave us a good excuse for a leisurely start to the day, we lingered over a delicious breakfast at the B&B, so by the time we arrived at Castletownbeare the skies had cleared. The aspiration was to head over to Dursey Island but the cable car is being repaired right now, so we opted to take the car ferry over to Beare Island. We had time for a wander around the busy harbour at Castletown full of colourful fishing boats, it was a hive off activity on the key with nets being repaired.
The ferry to Beare Island only takes 15 minutes, it's large and rugged and provides great shelter to Castletownbeare Harbour. We managed a couple loop walks at either end of the Island, the views north to the mountains of the Beara peninsula were quite stunning and across to the Sheeps Head peninsula to the South. The Island has a rich history and archeology, this standing stone was impressively situated high up in the center of the island. Today was abit of a taster but lots more to come back for!
Freespiral and himself had cooked a delicious supper and we mustered the energy for a few games of table tennis, a fine end to the day!
