Mt. Chocorua Quarter

Today I discovered two of these quarters (25 cents) in my pocket. They're new to me, and must be recently issued (bearing this year's date).

It's a image of Mount Chocorua (pronounced sh-CAR-u-ah), an iconic peak in New Hmapshire's Sandwich Range. It's one of the most visible mountains near our summer haunt in Tamworth (to which we'll be returning for a week in August). The heading "White Mountain" is misleading--Mt. Chocorua is indeed in New Hampshire's "White Mountains", but it's not its name.

IMPORTANT EDIT: email comment from a friend:
"This current quarter series commemorates national parks or other federal properties, in this case White Mountain (not Mountains!) National Forest. The problem is with the name of the National Forest, not with the quarter."

But in any case I am delighted to see this wonderful and familiar view (from Route 16 in Tamworth--marked on the map) immortalized on a coin--in fact locals speak of it as "the most photographed view in America." This only adds to its laurels. At least since 2000 the US Treasury has issued a series of quarters for the 50 states, each with a characteristic scene or emblem--nearly nearly all of them have been done, including New Hampshire, which pictures the late, lamented "Old Man of the Mountain" (the coin was issued in 2000, three years before the formation collapsed).

2nd edit: We're now (Thursday) in Edinburgh, Scotland--I posted this Wednesday afternoon from Logan Airport in Boston. Blip from Edinburgh to follow.
