Gollum

Sometimes when you look at a stained glass window you get an insight into the Medieval imagination. I think it looks remarkably like the fictional character Gollum from J R R Tolkein's tales from Middle Earth. However, it is about four hundred years older. It is the head of a  'grotesque', a feature perhaps better known in architecture (similar to a gargoyle but without the waterspout function). This is one of a pair that I found in a window that I've visited before but hadn't noticed. I don't know whether its there to protect the building or to scare the congregation!
