Balcarres Tower

A folly built on a crag above Balcarres Estate at Colinsburgh.
I was quite unsettled and agitated when I left Mitch’s this morning, so I just picked up Geordie and headed out for a good walk. We drove 4 miles to Colinsburgh, parked and walked up and around the grounds of the estate behind the house. The sky was blue, the sun was shining, it was windy and cold, but the scenery was beautiful. The trees in the grounds, although bare, were looking old, mature and majestic.
We made our way around to the woods, which are just carpeted in all directions with snowdrops, so lovely to see. I’ve never climbed up to the tower before, but felt the need for some exertion, although to be fair Geordie worked harder than me, pulling from the front. It was well worth the climb for the views and to see the tower up close. I could see across the Firth of Forth and up towards Edinburgh. Apparently before all the trees grew both Edinburgh and Stirling Castle could be seen.
We sat on a log for a while and had a biscuit, then made our way back down, trying not to look at the drop over the side of the crag. A slower walk back to the car, then home.
