The Lighthouse

As I was in the Lighthouse this afternoon for a meeting, I decided to take an interior shot of the Mackintosh tower.

The Glasgow Herald building was Charles Rennie Mackintosh's first big architectural job; a simple newspaper distribution warehouse.

It was built between 1893 and 1895. While most of the design is that of the practice, a lot of the proportions and the large tower are identified as Mackintosh's influences.

After lying derelict for 12 years, the former Glasgow Herald building was renovated and launched in 1999 as The Lighthouse, Scotland's Centre for Architecture, Design and the City.

Page & Park Architects were the principal consultancy responsible for the conversion and extension of the former Glasgow Herald building in Mitchell Street to accommodate a new centre for architecture and design.
