a lifetime burning

Oops

The female Wigeon seems to be tripping over her own feet before face planting into the water on landing.

This was not an accident and she wasn't alone in doing this, several females seemed to be doing it and often they do it in little groups.  They take off on a very short and low flight for only a few meters before deliberately diving into the water on landing.  They're not going fast enough to completely submerge so they end up looking slightly inelegant with their heads in the water and their bottom in the air.  But unlike ducks or swans feeding below the surface they immediately right themselves.  The males may do it as well, although I don't think that I saw any do so.
