Hereford Cathedral

The impressive Hereford Cathedral dates from the year 1079, although a place of worship has existed on this site since the 8th century or earlier.
This is the view of the Cathedral from the gardens at the rear. I would have taken one in front, but there were too many people in the way!
Hereford Cathedral is the home of the Mappa Mundi which is a unique medieval map of the world constructed on vellum (calf leather). It is believed to have been made around the year 1300 and shows the history, geography and destiny of humanity as it was understood in Christian Europe in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. See first extra for an image taken on a phone camera.

We also visited the rather pretty village of Eardisland where we set off for an extremely muddy walk (second extra). There is an old restored AA phone box there too. I remember my father was a member of the AA  (Automobile Association) breakdown service many years ago. Back then, membership meant you had a key to gain entry to these boxes to use the telephone inside to call for help if you had suffered a  breakdown.
