Herbs

It's nice to have an "ordinary" day pottering round the garden, especially this morning when the sun shone.

When we bought the house, the patio was surrounded by 4 beds planted with lavender surrounded by box hedges.  However, over the last 8 years the lavender has started to die, despite being fed, watered and pruned.  I guess it doesn't like its roots in almost pure chalk.  And the box is slowly succumbing to box blight and box tree caterpillar.  So I have grubbed up the worst plants from one of the beds and am going to plant it with a mixture of herbs.  I will dig in lots of new topsoil and compost, and it's a sunny spot.  If the herbs do well, I will plant some in the other 3 beds as well.
