A Rainbow Sort of Day

John slept in a little this morning which I took as a sign for me to venture to the bottom of the driveway for the newspaper. Clearly John usualaly goes to the mailbox across the street on this mission as Spike kept trying to go over there but one thing he can be relied on to do is come when called.

When we decided to go to the farmers' market today, we knew the weather could often be quite different on the other side of town. The sun was trying to come out at home so we decided to go. Jim said that their record was that it inevitably started to rain as soon as we got there. Which it did, but not for too long. The sky was clearing to the south of us but if we turned around it was dark and threatening in the other direction. The two vied with each other for most of the time we were there, but ultimately the rain won out and it was raining almost everywhere by the time we headed home.

It's kind of a shoulder season at the farmers' market. We saw citrus and strawberries but not much else in the way of fruit. There was lettuce and chard, root veggies, turnips, beets and carrots. The mushroom guy had a full selection of fungus, but not my favorite...chanterelles. There was a new vendor selling fresh oysters and the plant man told us it was time to 'clean up' our pitcher plant. We bought some cilantro and lettuce starts from him but resisted the tomatoes since we always have too many!

The farmers' market is right behind the hospital and surgery center, and I got a certain satisfaction of walking past and instead of a feeling of dread, knowing that that particular phase was now behind me. The showers came and went but I walked as purposefully as I could, buying monkey bread and scones which are a standard Saturday morning purchase and another unique flower arrangement from the Singing Frogs Farm, featured today. The lady with the white hair succeeded in looking quite elegant despite the overalls....

The showers have continued on and off today making a dog walk difficult. We came home to be greeted by a very wet dog, so he clearly went out for awhile on his own. I kept looking for a rainbow, but despite the mixture of sun and showers I didn't spot one. Perhaps the chilly winds had something to do with this. My exercises failed to warm me up so I have now crawled under the duvet to accomplish this.
