Cold War Hockey

This morning at the hairdressers I met Kit Gow,  former Scottish international hockey player. I hadn’t seen her since pre Covid days.

She tells me a mutual friend had rung her up to say she had just seen the documentary Cold War Hockey featuring Kit.
( BBC Alba, the Scottish Gaelic channel.)

Kit, a former PE teacher from Alloa, says she rarely talks about that event which contirubuted to peace because its such a long time ago and few remember it.

She was just 22 years of age at the time the Berlin Wall went up.

The  documentary reveals how a team of Scottish hockey players played a part in keeping  world peace at the height of the Cold War. Just weeks after the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961Scotland international women's hockey team played West Germany in Berlin.

Though the Scots lost the match, the socio-political impact of the game was "seismic" as it sent a message to the world that West Berlin remained open.

Well I didn’t expect to hear this piece of “living history” at the hairdressers from a woman who was at the centre of it.
