When I watered our balcony plants this afternoon, this horribly handsome grasshopper flew out and landed on the glass balustrade. It was not worried when I pointed a big camera at it. I think it's Valanga irregularis, common name Giant Grasshopper, native to tropical and sub-tropical Australia. Wikipedia says that the females can grow to 75mm or more (3 inches), which was about the size of this one.
