Arboreal Sphincter

This unexpected structure was found in the bark of a (dead) laburnum tree.

I have recently been looking at tree bark for features and textures that I can potentially use in abstracts. I need a replacement as I am deprived of my previous sources around the local harbours where the boats are now back in the water.
