More Secret Edinburgh

Back on the Secret Edinburgh trail again, this time out east down to the Gosford Estate down by Aberlady. (East, page 24) The main is an ice house designed by the architect Robert Adam in the 18th century. It was used for storing ice during the warmer months for use in the ‘big’ house as you see it is built into the hillside to maintain a lower, stable temperature and is fronted with what is called ‘random rubble’. The walk around the estate is short but has lovely views of the water features created for the benefit of the occupiers of the estate (The Lords Wemyss) and there was a lot of activity on the water with a mother duck and 5 teeny weeny ducklings, a couple of swans, one on the water and one on their nest, a couple of nesting herons and a bunch of geese, a couple of Brant and the rest Graylags (see extra). The views were relaxing and peaceful but the soundscape anything but.
