Out of the Shadows

Having travelled with Laura Cumming (see yesterday) as she delves into the past to try to bring the figure of Carel Fabritius out of the shadows, we couldn’t do anything else but stop over in London on our way to Delft . . . to find him.

And here he is - a self-portrait painted in 1654, the year of his untimely death. It hangs in a corner on its own in the National Gallery and I find it quite mesmerising. (In extras is the tiny painting that so beguiled Laura and set her on the journey to ‘find’ the painter.)

A lovely, warm sunny day in London. This evening we are going to see the Richard Hawley musical - ‘Standing on the Sky’s Edge’. In the morning we are travelling by Eurostar to Rotterdam and from there to The Hague.
