IN SALUTEM OMNIUN

A shore-based lighthouse located on West Harbour Road in Granton, Edinburgh, Granton Lighthouse was built 1874 as part of the Northern Lighthouse Stores and Buoy Yard. It was never in operation, but it was used to test new equipment and to train would be lighthouse keepers. It also became the base from which to keep the more than 200 lighthouses under the care of the Commissioners for Northern Lights serviced and supplied.

Even the fuel to keep the lights burning was produced on this site from a coal-gas plant. There was a Northern Lights presence there until 2001 when operations relocated to Oban.

The motto of the Commissioners for Northern Lights means For the safety of all.
