You may be thinking that these marks indicate the demise of a small bird or large insect which happened to be flying happily over the Edinburgh by-pass on a sunny Friday morning until our 70mph car windscreen got in the way.

You'd be wrong; it was a rock.

Perhaps it had been hitching a ride on the lorry not far in front and decided it had gone far enough.

Either way we need a new windscreen, as the crack is too big to mend.
