From the ashes

As part of a sporting weekend we went to Bradford City to watch Carlisle United, a team I've followed since I was a lad. My daughter, being born in Bradford, supports Bradford City. So mixed loyalties. City won 4 nil. United were lucky to get away with just four against.

The picture shows the main stand. This was built after the Bradford City fire in 1985 when 56 people were killed and over 200 injured. The old stand was wooden and years of rubbish had accumulated underneath. A discarded match or cigarette caused it to ignite. The fire changed the way football grounds were built and maintained. Almost everyone in the city knew someone who had been involved. The memories are still strong.
