Tytler Memorial

Today's walk began at the Boghall farm carpark and took a path over fields in the direction of Castlelaw, to visit this memorial to the Tytler family, Lairds of Woodhouselee.

Buried here are James Stuart Fraser, 1820-1891 and his wife Mary Elizabeth Blair, 1830-1857. The monument was erected in 1893 by their children and bears an inscription to their son, James William Fraser, 1854-1904. The monument also commemorates William, 1711-1793, Alexander Fraser, 1747-1815, and James, 1780-1862, the first three Lairds, who are buried in Greyfriars churchyard in Edinburgh.

Seen here from the rear, the monument overlooks the estate and site of the house, which was demolished in 1965 while in possession of the Ministry of Defence. On the horizon at the extreme left you might make out North Berwick Law.
