Sgwarnog: In the Field

Graig Uchaf

Drizzle and wind meant it wasn't the best day to go exploring one of Butterfly Conservation's reserves, but it was the only day that we had the opportunity.

Eyarth Rocks is a limestone hill top on the west side of the Vale of Clwyd. Thirty two different butterfly species have been recorded here, including many that I've never seen. Accompanied by 8yo and my eldest brother we hiked up through dripping woodland to the more open limestone pavement. As expected, we didn't encounter much, but a few Green-veined White, Gatekeepers and solitary Meadow Brown and Speckled Wood still showed for us.

This group of abandoned farm buildings lay in the woods next to the reserve. Graig Uchaf (highest rock) seems an appropriate name given the location.
