The North

Coming back from a visit to the big archaeological dig at Vindolanda, we made a brief stop on a high pass. Everyone else rushed to take photos of the Eden Valley, Cumbria stretched out below, but over my right shoulder I could see the sun shining on this hill and it looked like we were standing exactly where the Southern Uplands began. We were certainly still in Northumberland, just, but the contrast between this above and the much lower, flatter Eden Valley couldn't have been more stark.

Given a choice, I'd take stark.
