Wednesday 5 August 2009: Veld Fire

Since yesterday the newly grown fynbos has been burning and it is still ablaze.

Fynbos is the natural growth that takes over and establishes itself once intruder vegetation had been removed.

Between the smoke and the mountains lie the George dam - which hosts a large variety of birdlife and provides sustanance to many other wild animals of the area.

In this area, there used to be a pine forest till about three years ago - it was chopped down to make way for a new residential development - decision not favourably received by the residents of this area. Nothing much done as well. Just an empty forest!

Today, everywhere on the perimeter there are trucks and heavy duty vehicles - people standing and staring at the devastion that is raging - and I wonder what is going on in their minds.
