Tilberthwaite slate

Our meanderings took us to Tilberthwaite near Coniston today. Here slate was mined and quarried. Beneath the surface are many tunnels that the brave can explore today. It is also a mecca for climbers as the sides in places are vertical. The slate was used for building if it was hard and for floors if it was soft. It makes a lovely tinkling sound when walking over it .
