Sad Story

This statue holds pride of place in the Symi harbour but none of the dozen or so guided tours from Rhodes give him a moments notice, I think even the younger locals don't know why he is there. I do, and it needs to be remembered. So here's what I wrote the last time I was here.

Symi: WWII.

The Germans occupied this fair island and were not happy. Food supplies were low and things were not going well for anyone, the locals were starving and under orders to surrender all fish caught, on pain of death! In desperation the Greeks sent their children out to go and catch food for the family. They thought even the Nazis wouldn't execute little children.

They were wrong.

This statue is dedicated to all the young boys that tried to feed their families.
