Sunday 15 October 2006: Smart Smart Car
Up town again, at the bookshop. Bought a copy of On Royalty. As a republican ( lower case) I'm caught on the horns of a dilemma - the older I get the more I admire the Queen. She's been around for a long time - her first PM was Winston Churchill, she saw the creation of the NHS, the Suez Crisis, The Korean War, the end of empire, the assassination of JFK, the Vietnam War, Watergate and on through the death of Diana and the Falklands.
She does offer an image and model of stability and is genuinely held in people's affection but what's to come after her - a galoot or if he can't cut the mustard a playboy. Maybe that'll be the opportunity we need to dump the lot of them!
