Johnny Gentle was driving the van from Inverness across to Fraserburgh, relieving the regular driver, Gerry Scott, who wanted a rest. A little the worse for alcohol, Gentle drove straight into the rear of a stationary Ford Popular at a crossroads outside of Banff.
