Ramblings and Mutterings

Why do we never learn?

Another rugby match, another defeat and more disappointment!

I went to Cardiff today to see Wales v Australia, truth be known I wasn’t that confident, we’ve played the Southern Hemisphere sides in umpteen matches now and pushed them close but never won. Things started off with a bang, as the Aussies could have scored within minutes of the kick-off but it was Wales who turned it around and scored in the corner. When we went 10 nil up you thought the win was finally going to be on, but with Quade Cooper pulling all the tricks out of the bag and controlling things at 10 for Australia, Wales in truth were hanging on.

It didn’t take long for the Aussies to fire back with a great try, Cooper again being a magician, but why oh why were Wales trying to play rugby in their own 25. The All Blacks would never do it that early in the game, unless there was a clear cut opportunity to do some damage. After that it was one-way traffic really as Australia created chance after chance and built up a substantial lead of 30-16, and in truth the game was over.

However, Wales did come back and got within 4 points of the Aussies, and with 2 minutes to go got the ball back within their own 25. So Lord only knows why Liam Williams decided to kick possession away! But we still had one more chance but yet again we decided to try a grubber kick and that was it, Australia regained possession and run down the clock. Last week we witnessed the best side in world rugby in almost exactly the same position, and they went the full length of the field, recycling possession, probing for a weakness and lo and behold the All Blacks did it. Why oh why do we never learn?
