Home of the one-eyed nun

The Renaissance Centre in nearby Katoomba is a large imposing building, of the Federation Free Classical style and prominently positioned at the entrance to Katoomba Town Centre.

It was built in 1910 as Mount St Mary's College, a day and boarding school for 'Young Ladies'. They offered English, French Latin, German, Mathematics, Plain and Fancy Needlework, Drawing, Painting, Wood Carving, Callisthenics, Vocal and Instrumental Music. At the time the young ladies were prepared for University and Musical Examinations. Rumour had it that the asymmetrical four storey tower was the home to the one-eyed Nun who would appear at midnight to any brave enough to climb to the top.

The building has been derelict for many years now, despite a significant heritage listing. A more recent rumour is that it has been sold.

We shall see.
