River Rubbings

This stone post is beside the footpath along the Water of Leith near Currie Kirk. I've often wondered what it's for. On close inspection it's labelled "River Rubbings". Is this for people to make a charcoal rubbings? Seems strange as the image is vertical. Anyway, I enjoyed another good run up to Balerno and back.
