A swimmer

This is a young gannet, probably fledged within a week or so. They throw themselves from the cliffs at Bempton (from quite a height) will before they can swim. At this stage they are heavier than their parents. They then swim around off Flamborough and the East Yorkshire coast until they have lost some of the weight and their flight muscles have grown strong enough. Then once they can fly they start fishing (doing the familiar plunge diving) and then they're off migrating down toward Africa.
