Steall Falls

Errands in town dictated the best option to walk Caley was to take him with me in the car and to do something with him there. I haven’t been up Glen Nevis for ages. The torrential rain had two good things going for it. The burns and waterfalls would be at their foamy best and it was unlikely many other people would be daft enough to take a short trek up through the gorge on such a dreadfully unpleasant afternoon.
The walk up the gorge and beyond to the Steall Falls is an understandably popular attraction and there were another six folk about. They all headed off then Caley and I had the place to ourselves. The falls convey water from lofty corries in the heart of the Mamores. There is a recognised hill walking route called Ring of Steall here.
It was impossible to get a shot without droplets forming on the lens but I took about a dozen images. The Steall Falls are difficult to capture. Too far away and you lose the sense of scale, too close and the spray is everywhere. Getting closer also involves crossing the wire bridge. I don’t have a problem with this but I was concerned that a perplexed Caley may find the swollen river difficult to swim across. A short distance downstream the river enters the gorge and cascades onwards in a series of terrifying noisy falls.
This is the Steall Falls with the River Nevis in the foreground. I went with this shot because the submerged alder gives a feeling for the spate and you wonder how long it can retain its grasp on the bank.
