The Edge of the Wold

Layered bay

The last shot of the day, the pull of the Wolf House was too strong, though I have a feeling the light and layered reflections would have been even better after we left and the sky coloured up. On the far side of the Bay, in the Irish Sea there was a ship heading north. In the far distance, on the right of the photo, a few wind turbines in the big array off Walney Island are just visible.

The beginning of the day didn't fulfil the forecast promise. I looked out of the window when it was still dark and there were scattered clouds, but when Gus and I stepped out of the door half an hour later it was pouring with rain from a sky that was blanketed with Herdwick wool clouds. But the day got better, and while we sat on the big seat at Jack Scout looking into the Bay, the sun shone, the wind was still and there was no better place to be.

We haven't had a proper winter yet, there's been hardly a frost and no snow has settled and few flakes have fallen. Yet there are already new shoots, the snowdrops are growing quickly, and today I found hazel catkins that were shedding pollen.
