Warren House, Kingston Hill

Warren House is an interesting Victorian mansion on Kingston Hill, Surrey.

It was the home of the minor Liberal politician - George Grenfell Glyn, 2nd Baron Wolverton. He held office in three of the Liberal administrations of William Ewart Gladstone.

Wolverton was the eldest son of the the banker George Glyn, 1st Baron Wolverton. His grandfather Sir Richard Carr Glyn, and great-grandfather Sir Richard Glyn, had both been prominent London bankers and served as Lord Mayor of London.

When the Liberal Party split over the issue of Irish Home Rule. Wolverton supported Gladstone and was rewarded when he was made Postmaster General in February 1886, when Gladstone became Prime Minister for a third time. However, the government fell in July the same year

Baron Wolverton lived at Warren House in Coombe, Kingston upon Thames. The house was built in 1860's for Hugh Hammersley, and then extended 1884-6 by the architect George Devey.
