calendar girl

When I was researching and reading about Myanmar before this trip I had no idea as to how conversations about the political situation would be and if they would/could even happen. And as to mentioning Aung San Suu Kyi, 'The Lady' well that was definite mystery.

However in the tiny bookshops tucked away in alcoves along the streets or spread on pavement blankets, her books are on sale (along side collections of George Orwell's books) as are calendars and T shirts with the NLD banner and her image.

Our river guide spoke about politics, insurgencies, ethnic minorities and autonomous regions, education and health issues, the 'lady' and the constitution which excludes 70 year olds being the country's next President.
River villages had National League for Democracy offices with her portrait painted on walls and houses and stickers with her face above the headlights on scooters and motorbikes ridden by young women.

The times they do seem to be a-changing.
