Almost 500 years old...

Well 494 years old to be precise.
This cross is known as Foldy's Cross and it once stood outside the south door of Burnley Parish Church.
It has a Latin inscription that translates as ”Pray for the soul of John Foldy, chaplain, who caused this cross to be made in the year of our Lord 1520″.
In 1789 the shaft had become damaged and it was then moved to Towneley and re-erected with a new shaft.

The recent wet weather has caused it to be covered with a green algae which unfortunately I don't think adds anything to the visual attraction of the cross :-(
