More Gulls

After my recent gull rant on 30th January, I found myself back at Amwell today. So here's a couple of gulls that are easy to identify. On the left is a Common Gull, on the right is a Black-headed Gull.

The Common Gull isn't actually as common as the Black-headed Gull and at this time of year the Black-headed gull doesn't have a black head. Actually to be perfectly correct the Black-headed Gull never has a black head it's more a deep chocolatey colour. If you want a UK example of a truly black headed gull then you need to seek out a summer plumaged Mediterranean Gull. A good spot for them is at the end of Southend Pier, which the more astute among you will realise is not on the Mediterranean. Don't you just love gulls.
