A Dog's Dinner

There Goes the Sun

The weather picked up today, nice and bright and warm too. So it was up and at 'em and we got stuck into some log cutting and splitting. Today I learned that the timber at the bottom of a tree, in this case beech, is much more dense that stuff higher up the trunk.

Now this may seem obvious to you but it did strike me as a bit of a revelation.

The chainsaw was having a real job dealing with it. When I think abut it, the trunk must get compressed under it's own weight and so get denser and more difficult to cut.

Today was the first time we've notice the sun leaving us for the winter. As the season progresses the sun dips down behind the hill in front of the house earlier and earlier in the day until we don't see it at all. It was away by 1.30 today so in about month from now it will go until late February.

Actually it was nice to notice it happening.
